Max ELSKAMP ! (1862-1931)

 Star of the sea

 And ships, and ships,
 and sails, and sails, and so many sails,
 My poor eyes go into the waters,
 There is more than there are stars;

 And yet I know, I know, I know
 So many stars and I have seen
 Above the roofs of my streets,
 And I have sweated and I know;

 But there are more ships,
 - And I know so many that have gone away -
 But it is my will here,
 How many ships there are more;

 And there are ships, there are the beautiful
 On the sea, in women's robes,
 Following the banners
 At the end of the sky sunk into the water,

 And there are ships so many on the water
 The sea seems a canvas country,
 My poor eyes go into the water,
 There are more than there are stars.
